More Irish models - size of market Empty More Irish models - size of market

Post  JOB Wed May 11, 2016 7:12 pm

I make no secret of wanting to get models made of cars I have sat in.
After many years trying I now have enough photos to do the John McCarthy Carlow Stages 2004 (ex McHale) Corolla WRC. John more famously won the Irish Forestry Championships in this car with a different colour scheme on it. JFE says he will do it but I am convinced that the market for such a model is miniscule. A better option may be to ask Carlo to do the decals. Hence I am asking for expressions of interest for both options and I honestly expect few if any !!!

Second one is the Roy White Fiesta - again JFE wishes to do it. I am urging a wait and see approach but again I expect a low level of interest. I know there are a bunch of builders who expressed interest but in my opinion the market is so small that it will only support one builder. There are a whole range of other models not yet done - look at the Spaniard who is doing Circuit of Ireland models.

Maybe its time again for a thread on models people would like to see done - a bit along the lines of the old Forum model. It might give the builders a steer in the direction of what collectors would buy.

The enthusiasm is overwhelming- as expected.

But what is equally interesting is the fact that there seems to be little appetite out there for models that have not yet been done. Maybe the thread heading is wrong/misleading.

There were many cars came to my attention during the Circuit Deja Vu business that I could not believe had not been done. On that front there were upwards of 50 models not completed by the deadline so as each grouping is done ( arbitrary groupings decided by yours truly) I will get decent photos of them and post them on the thread. They will be displayed in the flesh on 30 October. Just today I took delivery of 2 x HFH Manta 400's , HFH Astra and upgraded Coyne Sunbeam.

A car I haven't done but brings back memories was Dan Daly's Nissan 240RS - would make a lovely model.

Or Davy Evans 240 RS that he got 3rd on the Circuit on what I think was his 1st ever proper rally! Amazing too that we have till now had nearly no Asconas and 3dr Sierras, IMO I think too many from now are done as it is easy to get details to do them, and too many from the past are overlooked as they are more work, could be totally wrong though and maybe its just the current cars sell better?

Modern cars dont appeal to me at all. Of all the current cars rallying in ireland at the moment, I think theres about 4 that I would have in my collection. Two i can get base models in 1/18 so will build them myself one day, Roy Whites current feista and Kellys focus. The other 2 are Cronins DS3 and maybe surprisingly, Connollys red R5.

These liverys are all pretty simple, Connollys is just red with the red mills logos, but thats why I like it. Im not a fan at all of the current designs on the cars. Far too busy, too much going on that is all a blur at speed anyway and in my opinion, dont scale down well. Of course there are some exceptions. O Riordans feista makes for a great model.

I would have though that some of the older models would have been done by now. The West cork display highlighted some pretty major gaps in cars that should have been done. I know Piotr in Poland is catching up with a couple that we had done for the show but the COI display highlight even more cars that havnt been done. Some of the more obscure cars will never be done other than that one off, but cars like David Llewellin celica, the seirras etc should have been done by someone at this stage.

CODE343 would happily consider some of these long awaited model / decal releases if enough reference material could be sourced - it's about time I had some non-Metro 6R4 material to the range! Wink

Drop me an email to the address below with your suggestions, and I'll give them some thought...

I pretty much agree with your thoughts Brian, but is it a sign of our ages? I've almost no interest in pre 1979, this ties with my 1st getting to rallies as a kid, and the late 80's and 90s are for me my favourite era tying in with when I'd freedom and ability to get to events almost at will. Has anyone else the same pattern in their model collecting interests?

Huge gaps. I know Cullen's Donegal winning car was done as a small run but to my knowledge his shappire or escort weren't. You would have to think that the likes of either would sell. We see one off builds here and they really wet the appetite. If the base models were available gallaghers starlet I would love to have.

If it's any use as a guide to older stuff that I'd like, here's a list to start the ball rolling

Bertie Law - Chevette
Winston Henry - Escort Mk2 BIB 8888
Bill Connolly - Chevette DZY 1
Bill Connolly - M3 GXI 9427
Dick Bailey - 6R4
Enda Nolan - Sierra Cosworth (3dr white/red)
Enda Nolan - Sierra Cosworth (Saphire, 7UP)
Donie Keating - Chevette (Pernod) BVE 187V
Donie Keating - 6R4 SOF 406
Franco Bove - Escort Mk2 1421 IP
Ian Greer - Manta 400 LIJ 1909
Niall Maguire - Manta 400 400 ZP
James Leckey - Escort Cosworth
Demi Fitzgerald - Chevette

That would be a start anyway Very Happy

Id take one of each of the above too. Not enough Niall Maguire cars done in my opinion, but again, not many would by them. You could struggle to sell 10 of each, a risk not many builders will take

Connolly M3 decals available from carlo Rovatti
Enda Nolan Sapphire 7UP - currently being done by Carlo - I gave him some photos
Demi Fitz Chevette - done by Mike Nellis in very small numbers
Donie Keating Pernod Chevette done by Mike Nellis for me for Circuit Deja Vu as a once off.

What I suggest is you put together a file of the photos for the cars in question - I have found Carlo to be a very hard task master. If I do not have all the photos he will not proceed. Short of one of the builders on here committing or Piotr in Poland doing the model Carlo seems to be the best option.

A model that I cannot believe has not been done is the Snijers Manx M3 - it would have both a Belgian and an Irish/Uk market . Question

If there was a company that would do small runs of high quality decals (say 25 sets Max) these cars could be done
I would be interested in doing some of them myself

Have to agree with James, modern Irish rally cars don't really apeal to me. 80s, 90s and early 2000 cars hard to beat.
Llewellin Celica, Tovinen Ascona, Crozier & Maguire Mantas to mane a few.

Welcome back Young Walsh.

As regards my first post on this thread - Carlo has done the decals for the John McCarthy Corolla WRC - Donegal International or Carlow National in the one set. JFE has done two versions of the Roy White Fiesta.  Finally a car I never expected to get done is the George Plsek Evo 9 from 2015 US rally season - I was lucky to do the Olympus Rally in it. US drivers retain the same door number throughout the year so any number of events can be done from the same (code 3 ?) base. Piotr (modele skelp ) has just done it. Razz

More Irish models - size of market Empty Enda Nolans Cosworth 7up

Post  KatieNolan Sun Dec 11, 2016 6:22 pm

Hi !
I found this thread through a Google search & still amazed. I'm Enda Nolans daughter and hence that's how this popped up as I was looking for pictures for something compelety different I was doing. Reading through this thread it seems you make model rally cars and we're planning or may already have made up a model car of the 7up Cosworth. If so I would love if anyone at all could let me know if it's possible for me to get some done ? Also any pictures anyone has they could send on. Some of Dad's moments in rally were when I was a baby and before some of our times so it's something we love hearing about and this is by far the best thread I've come across yet ! I hope I've posted this I the right place and if not I apologise taking me a while.to figure the site out Smile

Many thanks !
Katie

Katie,
Delighted you found us. When your dad sold the car Liam O'Callaghan bought it and I was his navigator. I have memories of your Dad and Michael Lyster doing events like the Circuit of Ireland. Someone sent me pictures of your Dad's car a while back looking for help with stickers on it. Have you got a set of decals and/or a model made ? Great to hear from you. James O'Brien

Hi Katie, This is one I have taken a few screenshots of from videos with the intention of making a model of it but never got round to it.

Its a really nice livery, nice and simple but suits the car well, and would make a great model

We have no decals but I could ask if anyone would know if someone had them and get back to you !

The pictures of the models I can't seem to see. Itaye just not be loading on my phone. Is this so something that I old go about doing? I know it would involve alot of work but if anyone is willing to give me some tips or point me in the right direction it'd be greatly appreciated !

Katie,
I will check to see who was enquiring and find out what progress they have made. Iknow that I was speaking to Tom Gahan, who built the car, about one of the photos. If/when the decals are done, you can then buy a set and there are people on here who can put the decals on a base model for you. Photos of your late father are up on www.rallyretro.com and a guy called Seamus Counihan with a website called www.crspics.com also has photos. I assume you are on facebook - if so then so are many of us and we can steer you in the direction of photos on there.
James
