No experience personally mate, but I gather once you have the 3D form scanned in, then yes it is possible to scale down. I guess scaling up will be limited due to the fact that the detail might not be quite as fine and precise at a larger scale. Ultimately I guess the best option would be to scan a complete car or wheel at 1/1th scale and then you're sorted for all eventualities.

Interested in your question though mate, and intrigued what plans you have in your mind too. Suspect

You know the wheels I have in 1/18 for my golf, would like them in 1/43 for a Metro or 5 Laughing

Was chatting to a friend today who is in the printing business and we got talking about plastic/3d printing and he told me he is considering investing in a machine and had the model market as one of his possible outlets for products. I hope to chat to him in more detail on Sunday about it, what are the main things people would be interested in?? Also would modified shells be an option to make??

I think parts would be the main things. Generally rims, spoilers that kind of thing.

I still think we are a few years away from seeing 3d printing to be what we are all looking for. The cost of getting stuff print v cast is to great at the moment. When printing gets cheaper we will see much more products on the market.

Its not just the cost of the material, its the cost involved with designing the product in 3d software. Rims could take hours, shells would take days/weeks. The knowledge and training to design 3d objects is beyond what people could just pick up like photoshop etc so there would be much fewer people to design them

ok, so here is a few cents of my experience and ideas about 3D printing in the modelling arena...


talking about shells, at this moment due to the material consumption the costs are really high. so I guess if to do a single body shell and would not worth it. but to use as a base for a resin copy and sell then might be an option. but still an expensive one...

here below is a photo of a 3D printed shell with two options...

the wrecked one is due to wrong programming...
second one is after they fixed the programming and the result. but this time no opening on the model.... I guess this car had very fine corners that the structure is not strong enough to support the body.
actually, the material is pretty strong but as its thin it can change shape easily. so its not steady....

talking about preparing a decent body shell, for instance a Subaru, Mitsubishi etc with details way more detailed then above shell, will cost around 500-1000 euros according to my estimations...

at this moment there are many people trying to get this 3D sorted and print parts, complete models etc...

some already in the market for very long time some just started. but this becomes more of a design oriented job. as long as you can do the 3D drawing and convert your drawing to a printer language... then you are ready to go with some service companies..

I am in touch with a guy from Taiwan, one from China, one from Italy and another one from France. and keep searching for more options and results.
my current impression is, if the guy behind 3D drawing and also printing is not from this hobby or a car enthusiast, its very easy for them to miss the details, measurements of the fittings...
I have had number of parts in hand that are either not correct size or with curves to complete the result. The tires doesn't fit the wheels, bumpers doesn't fit the curves of the car etc.... they all need modification or to be a part of diorama, being useless...

but as you guys mentioned, we are very much in the beginning of this new era. and I am sure this technology will bring great results for our hobby in the near future with the help of more experienced and knowledge people...

i have to say i'm yet to be convinced m8.....don't mean to be the fly in the ointment but the detailing quality would need to be vastly improved, the structure much more rigid and the cost much less, to convince me its a better option than the resin models of Otto, Wedge etc, or the 'closed' bodyshell variation which autoart did at reduced prices a while back... od course if it does become a viable option then happy days for us...! Smile as we have discussed before Omer, there are only a few collectors who are willing to pay big money for high-end models, for the vast majority of us, our desires are tempered by our wallets...... time will tell m8 Smile
