shortening a Bertby!!
so here's my plan ( )..... i have a space perfect in height for my vat-man collection, freeing up more shelves for ever-increasing irish stuff....as the space sits between my two bertby cabinets, but is only 2/3 the height of one, i intend to have a go at shortening an identical bertby to sit between the other two
yeah i know, what a ba__ix i'll make of that, i hear you say!! anyway, if anyone has done this, or can advise/help/suggest methods/warn against folly/come pick it up and do it for me ( ) please feel to comment....
of course if it comes out ok, i'll plaster this thread with pix, but if i sc_ew it up then you'll never hear another word about it, sounds about right??
comments welcome.....

Billy
Take the panels to a local Builders Merchant or Joinery workshop and the precision saw will leave a factory finish to exact measurements!

Re: shortening a Bertby!!
col, chris, thanks lads....
so today i dismantled the bertby, and have cut down each of the steel vertical rods which form the skeleton and cross-beams of the cabinet....
first obstacle is the fact that at each end of the rods is a thread onto which screws a chrome nut, which when tightened, pulls the whole thing tight together...when shortening each of the rods i obviously have lost these 4 threaded ends....so my idea is to use strong adhesive to glue them inside the nuts which in turn i will glue into the holes in the wooden top....i bored out the threaded nuts today, and the rods fit tight inside...will glue them monday and leave a day or two...the only cutting needed done professionally is the 4 glass panels.....

Nice one Billy. Sure a local glazier will cut them without any problems.

em.................NO!!
so i bought a good glass cutter, scratched along the cut-line as per instructions, but couldn't break it, even with full body-weight.... so with an extra body to help, i tried again and.........................SMASH!!!! the whole sheet exploded!!
turns out it was toughened glass, and not even glaziers can cut that...........
hhmm.............. ah well

Your glaziers can't be very good, they cut toughened glass for me here.

Re: shortening a Bertby!!
chris, you sure its toughened and not just laminated they cut for you.....my glaziers and all other 'experts' i consulted agreed that toughened glass cannot be cut, as its under tension after being created, hence it explodes when cut/broken, as in a car windscreen, etc....
