Monte Carlo Rally stages
Monte Carlo Rally that stage…
There was some chat on the old forum about this famous stage on the Monte Carlo Rally. Well a week or so ago I was lucky enough to be marshalling on an historic rally to Monte Carlo. We had been up and over the Col du Turini on Friday and just for the hell of it did it again the anti-clockwise direction on the Saturday on our way home.
We had been looking for this wiggly road for a while and stumbled over it.
Roquesteron is a famous Monte village in the mountains, on the D17. Travelling east the next village is Sigale. Between the two in the D10 heading SW for Aiglun. The really narrow section in the gorge can be found at the viewpoint. It is very narrow single track road with a very steep drop to the river. When we were there it was under perfect blue sky and 20 degrees.
And another famous Monte Stage The Col du Braus on the D 2204 from Sospel to L’Escarene

Very good story and nice pictures Chris..
Spectators at the exit of the tunnel haven't much room.

Brilliant but terrifying. No wonder Schumacher always said he had no interest in Rallying as you needed to be insane. 100mph on ice/snow anyone? You know whats the size of spacehoppers are a must.

Not doubting you for a second James, but you still need the bravery pills from where I'm sitting - thats why i hold the rally drivers in such high regardsJOB wrote:Guys you drive the road not whats at the other side of the wall even if there is nothing at the other side of the said wall but fresh air.reeft1 wrote:Brilliant but terrifying. Brilliant piece Chris, kicking myself I didn't drive them in the summer when I was down there, although the wife and kids would probably have freaked out looking out the side of a rental scenic, they are not as brave as James:P

Re: Monte Carlo Rally stages
We looked at those ledges they stand on.
You can barely get two feet firmly on them. There is definately no room to shuffle in. One has a small tree on it, so something to lean on I guess??!!
Trevor P has a side on photo with the car showing the scale of it all. I will post it as soon as he sends it on to me.
On the rally we had everyting, hail, rain, snow and sunshine. On one day we were looking to do a control at the top of the Col de Faucille. But we had info that there had been a landslip and the route was closed. As we got to the barrier the snow was really getting heavy and not wishing to be stuck on the top we moved the TC to the village. Still a few of them went up to the top looking for us despite the Route Barrier.
All good fun and what rallying is all about.

Yikes! That wooden barrier wouldn't stop much, would it?!
I think I'll keep to spectating at rallycross events. They don't tend to be THAT dangerouns to watch! Great shots, Chris. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Steve
