upscaling decals
guys, is it possible to upscale a set of decals; i have a 1:24 set i wish to convert to 1:18; am i right in thinking this is a 25% increase (increase of 6 which is 1/4 of 24); what do i need, is it something special?
cheers in advance guys

Re: upscaling decals
If you can wait a few days while my laptop comes back i can do it for you Billy. There is an exact percentage but ive it saved in a file on the laptop.
While scaling up to 1/18, sometimes some things need to be redrawn as any small defect on the scan will become bigger.

Re: upscaling decals
Wow, that's a headache causing question Billy!
However, I think it's a 133.3% enlargement Billy...
A logo 100cm long @ 1/24 scale is 4.17cm long on the model - correct?
The same 100cm long @ 1/18 scale is 5.56cm long on the model - correct?
So on a 1/24 scale model the 4.17cm long logo needs enlarging to 5.56cm long to fit the 1/18 scale model - correct?
5.56 divide by 4.17 equals 1.3333333333333333 which equates to a 33.3% increase in size - correct?
Well I think that's right, but maybe someone else could confirm my calculations?

wow... so much maths

Re: upscaling decals
Surely it's the 33.33% increase as a 100% increase would double it to 1/12!!!

Re: upscaling decals
Mere terminology Sean...
An increase of 33.3%, or an enlargement to 133.3% might have been a better way of putting it.
I'll just pop back and edit my post a tad!

Re: upscaling decals
Found the file on a hard drive
To scale from 1/24 to 1/18, scale by 133%
To scale from 1/24 to 1/43, scale by 59%
To scale from 1/18 to 1/43, scale by 42%
To scale from 1/18 to 1/24, scale by 75%
To scale from 1/43 to 1/24, scale by 179%
To scale from 1/43 to 1/18, scale by 238%
These of course are the mathematical scalings, and while they will allow an excellent start point, a trial print should be used to make sure they are ok. A small error in sizes in 1/43 will only be exaggerated when scaled up to 1/18

Re: upscaling decals
It may work with the scanner, but be sure to scan it at normal size as well, then, if the scanner doest size it correctly, a program can be used to scale it up

Re: upscaling decals
ok folks, good news and bad.....
the works scanner has upscaled them perfectly to 133% of the original, and the quality is perfect....no blurred lines etc;
only thing is, the original sheet was a kind of blue-grey colour, and this also shows on the upscale; so when i try to create decals, the background colour will be blue-grey, not clear as required...this is obviously only a problem with things like writing, where the background is seen, on solid decals which i cut out, its not n issue.....what am i missing?

Re: upscaling decals
those Vatanen decals arent the most complex, probably be as well to redraw them? If you're in no panic and not sorted in a week or 2 I'll get you sorted

Re: upscaling decals
theres a tool in photoshop (think its the magic wand tool) that allows you to select the background colour and delete it. Not the best way but certainly the easiest and should produce a good finish

Re: upscaling decals
thanks guys, been thinking about this all morning (yeah i'm at work lol!); this is maybe a stupid suggestion.....what if i soak all the original decals, remove them as normal from the blue background sheet, and place them carefully onto a white a4 sheet of paper....then i scan this and copy it onto my blank decal paper? would that be a silly notion? i would lose my white decal but could do that separately.........
am i talking cr_p?
