Re: Race Retro 2017
Excellent news Chris, and I look forward to contributing to the SHMAC display in Hall 1 - business as usual! - and spending some time in your, and the company of the others, over the course of the weekend.
I have the whole weekend booked off work, a few days before, and the obligatory day or two afterward to recover, as well. I'm sure the first few days of the 10 days off, will be well spent finishing off my last few contributions to the display... ...it's not Race Retro unless I'm busy right up to the last minute!
My dedicatedXXXXXXXXXXXX display is coming together very nicely, not only with the acquisition of certain existing 'mass produced' model subjects, but also in the creation of some future CODE343 decal releases, and model builds.
See you all at RR2017!....

Race Retro brings Rally Legends to Stoneleigh Park
Rally fans are in for a treat at Race Retro, the international historic motorsport show, as we
have lined up a ‘clash of the titans’ as Finnish rally legends Ari Vatanen and Markku Alén join our 15th anniversary celebrations by getting back behind the wheel on the bespoke Live Rally Stage.
Vatanen and Alén are larger than life characters who are guaranteed to delight the crowds. To have them with us at the show is one thing but to have them in action, driving these amazing Group B cars on our Rally Stage is something you won’t see anywhere else. We are thrilled to have them as part of our ‘Super Show’.

Re: Race Retro 2017
Hope it's a success Went to Autosport Show yesterday Unfortunately it was even worse than I remembered it from when I was last there four or five years ago I suppose it's horses for courses and there was a large turnout of the engineering suppliers but for those of us whose interests lie more in the model memorabilia books etc end it was to my mind a complete waste of time

Re: Race Retro 2017
Latest news from the SHMAC stand at Race Retro
The organisation has been a bit frenetic this year with far too much online paperwork being issued by the new organisers, and their left and right hand are not in sync..
So the SHMAC stand in in our usual corner spot in Hall 1 on Stand 450 and we will be looking directly into the real Ford RS500 car display
Dave S will have a Tribute to Tony Pond display (its not all 6R4s!!!)
Steve N will have a 50 Years of Rallycross display
Chris D will have a Tribute to Colin McRae 10 years on display
Paul H will have a 60 years on pit scene from the 1957 Le Mans 24hrs featuring the Jaguar D Types and Lotus X1 cars.
...and also the 'Goffer' Dave C who will be there to support all the effort.
Thank you to all the above for supporting the Team effort at RR2017.
If you are visting the show you wil be most welcome on our stand. We dont know everyone on the forum so come along and say hello.
I have not seen a list of the real rally cars performing outside, on a new track layout. But it will be busy with 70 cars. They might get p***** off with less runs for them? NOTE these cars only run on Saturday & Sunday and that Ari Vatanen & Marku Alen will be attending the show
Check out full details on the shows website at www.raceretro.com
See you all there...
Cheers

Mmm...
So not all fire breathing Grp B monsters (I really do hate that phrase) they keep banging on about?
Two 2.5 hour sessions each day to accomodate the 83 cars.

I broke up from work yesterday afternoon at 3pm, and now have five and a half days of model making ahead of me, as I ready my final plans for my display. Fingers crossed that the last model kits, base models, and decals all arrive back in good time!
Mrs Sims is of course very supportive at this time of year. I cannot speak for the other 51 weeks of the year however, as based on previous years, that will be a case of earning sufficient 'Brownie points' in readiness for the next Race Retro.
See you at Stonleigh, one and all...
PS - My tickets and extras arrived safely in the post on Thursday - many thanks, Chris.

Good effort Mr Sims
I am sure it will all be worth it.
So when are you fitting the new kitchen....

Evening
Thank you for David and Steve making myself and my youngest boy welcome on the club stand today, it was great to meet you both.
Steve's rallycross display was superb, attention to detail was great. David's rover and TP display was second to none, there is even a couple of non rover pond cars in there . David's pond chequered flag stratos is excellent.
It was also good to see Chris's McRae display/ collection again a credit to you.
Well done guys
Mark

Re: Race Retro 2017
After the slight debacle getting in on Saturday( finally snapped after 20 minutes queuing trying to get off the motorway and found another way in!) had to go straight to the stage. Interesting mix of cars this year a lot more " moderns" but the stage seemed to run better than ever and was really pleased to see the "Monte" spec Brookes Escort.
As had the missus in tow spent a lot less time in the jumble than usual as she is trying to get me to sell stuff rather than buy but to be honest think I may have struggled to spend a lot and ended up getting some Gas Monkey merch and that was it.
Quick visit to the stand and nice to see Chris and Dave and the displays as good as ever.
Will be interesting to see how the show goes under the new owners but guess it will try and go up market which may be sad...
Took loads of pics on the stage so will post later.

The SHMAC display at Race Retro 2017
Chris D - Tribute to Colin McRae – 10 Years On
Steve N – 50 Years of Rallycross
Dave S – Tribute to Tony Pond
Paul H – 60 Years since Jaguar, Lotus and the Brits dominated the 1957 Le Mans 24hrs
Big thanks to all of the above for their tireless dedication into putting on these displays every year. Also to Dave C for supporting all our efforts this year with his knowledge and enthusiasm. Also to their above wives and girlfriends for letting their boys put so much time into these displays.
Hopefully the new organisers don’t crap in their own nest and we will be back next year.
In the meantime I am looking for a caravan…..

Many thanks for your kind words regarding my display, and those couple of particular models you mentioned. Watch this space though, as those decal sets, and others, will be available in due course....
PS - Thank you for noticing the 'non-Rovers'!

I did see you chatting with Chris & Dave, but didn't get a chance to pop over before you left, Chris. Glad you liked the displays, the stage, and the show in general. Fingers crossed the new organisers go from strength to strength, rather than change the format too much, put up the trade stand prices, and alienate the regulars.Sal the 2nd wrote:After the slight debacle getting in on Saturday( finally snapped after 20 minutes queuing trying to get off the motorway and found another way in!) had to go straight to the stage. I must say that the build up to the show from my point of view was somewhat more challenging this year. I had taken a week off work prior to the show as I knew I wouild be racing to finish off a few late additions to my display - as always. However, on the Sunday night whilst trimming an MGF interior door panel so that it would fit around the roll cage that I had added, I sliced through the end of my finger - approx 25mm in length and almost a centimetre deep! Following a dash to A&E, I emerged with about a dozen strerastrips, Super Glue and a bandage that had to remain on for several days. Talk about hampering my agility and model building / decal placement ability!
Then my Android mobile dies and was sent off to have the sealed in battery replaced, and I was lent an old iPhone as a replacement. Not having the phone back in time I had to rely on the iPhone as a SatNav to get me to the show on Thursday evening.
The culmination of being late to leave home on the Thursday as I was still finishing off my last models - due to my restricted ability caused by my injury - the fact that my last decals didn't arrive from the printer until 10:40am that day, and then reliant on a SatNav system that I was totally unaccustomed to, supported by Storm Doris and the enevitable traffic delays, meant that I didn't actually arrive at Stonleaigh until 8:30 in the evening - by which time there was only 30 minutes to set up, and Chris, Dave, Steve and Paul were completely emaciapated (sp?) and bordering starvation!
But don't mention anything - I think I just about got away with it!
Re: Race Retro 2017
The show was superb this year, and manically busy on the Saturday morning - almost bordering on the rush hour on a Lundon underground tube at times!
The new organisers seemed to carry on pretty much with the old format throughout the weekend, and that was probably the safest option, with more changes to come in subsequent years once they are a little more accustomed to the format, and can see what works and what needs a revamp.
The SHMAC stand generated a great deal of interest over the weekend, and I would like to thank you - Chris & Paul - for making myself, Dave and Steve feel most welcome as 'club outsiders' or honorary members. Thank you gents.
I had so many more plans of model subjects to include in my Tony Pond display...
1981 Vauxhall Chevette HSR - Arena white metal kit ordered on 10 February, and still not arrived!
1983 Trimoco BSCC 'Unipart / Daily Express' Grp A MG Metro Turbo - decals didn't arrive in time, and decided not to rush it.
1983 Austin Rover Rallysprint Grp A Rover Vitesse - ran out of time, and hampered by injury.
1989 Birmingham Superprix MG Metro 6R4 - as above.
1984 Mewla Stages MG Metro 6R4 - as above.
However, apart from my existing Metro 6R4s, other off the shelf subjects, and some others lent to me by Chris & Dave, I also managed to build the following for the show - some of which will be available as CODE343 limited edition models or decal sets releases in due course...
1968 road rallying Mini Cooper
1974 Welsh Rally Escort RS2000 Mk1
1976 Boucles de Spa 'Checquered Flag' Lancia Stratos
1978 Manx Rally 'Alitalia' Fiat 131 Abarth as tested in Autocar magazine
1980 Aurora AFX F1 Championship Arrows as tested in Cars & Car Conversions magazine
1984 Spa 24 Hours 'Gitanes' Grp A Rover Vitesse
1985 Manx Rally 'Computervision' Grp A Rover Vitesse
1988 Birmingham Superprix MG Metro 6R4
1997 MGF Cup test & development car
1997 Goodwood Festival of Speed MG Metro 6R4
Watch this space, and see you all again in 2018!
(Photos to follow)

Well done guys. Incredible display. I know just a little of what you went through. From the outside the rest of us can marvel and compliment you on the incredible display but you are "mourning" the models that you wished were ready on time and didn't make it. Huge time effort and no small amount of expense gone into this. Congrats and maybe I will make it over next year. James

Mark
David did say you were there, will catch up with you soon Mark

Re: Race Retro 2017
Good pictures Chris, Penningtons's evo 9 based polo looked effective on the stages. Perez's S1 Quattro, went like the clappers once it came on boost . It really brings home how far turbo rally cars have come in 30-40 years.
The fiesta R5 was serouilsy rapid, its change of direction and weight transfer were quite noticeable compared to the older cars.
Still cannot beat an escort, manta or a V8 for sheer theatre :

You are right there is no sound like a proper Escort, a V8, a Quattro. Legacy etc. We all have our favourite old car sounds
Steve N and myself had a trip out with Jeff W in his TR8 but with too much power, hard old slicks on slippery tarmac there was just no grip.
We watched one session from the far side and Matthew Ceen in the modern black Fiesta R5 was just visibly fast, the car had no problem with any surface.
As you say it just shows how far technology has come.
