Re: Rally Teams Workshops
Interesting part of the history....
'photo was taken at the FIAT workshops in Nairobi's industrial area'
"The end of the road for Vic Preston Junior and John Lyall, Safari Rally 1986. They rolled and ended up up-side down in a ditch. The shape of the ditch meant that they couldn't open the doors of the car. The spare wheel was roof mounted, which meant the roof was pushed into the cabin during the roll, reducing the already limited space inside the cabin. The crew escaped by knocking out the door windows (plastic) and digging their way out of the ditch, whilst the leaking fuel tanks covered them in petrol!"

Thats a scary experience. Like being buried alive only covered in petrol and knowing any spark could set it off

Re: Rally Teams Workshops
... that's true, Omer, but in the 60s, they made some small cars such as the 44 and 66 which used an innovative transmission system very similar to the CVT transmissions developed for the same principle in the 80s onwards.
I know from experience that you could drive around quite effectively drive around town using the throttle pdeal only. The CVT transmission meant no gear changing and by lifting off the throttle, the car dragged to a halt very quickly.
Bizarre little cars, there was even an 'estate' version. The company was eventually taken 0ver by Volvo, I believe.
Cheers, Steve

Re: Rally Teams Workshops
Good man Omer. Hofnar used to have a factory here and my father worked in the engineering section. I can remember as a child they had a poster of the rally car with the Hofnar logos in their workshop. Happy memories

Re: Rally Teams Workshops
Am i right in saying they only had two gears. Forward and reverse. I can remember someone saying you could go as fast in reverse as you could forward.

Re: Rally Teams Workshops
That's true, and it made them a very popular choice for "Reverse Racing", which was shown in prime time in the Netherlands in the 80s.
Some of the images are mirrored but you get the idea, madness!

The organiser once said he got a phone call from the police, asking him if he was planning new races because they'd noticed a 400% increase of Dafs being stolen.
The early rallycross versions had 4x4 and BDA engines, with the driver sitting on top of the Variomatic gearbox.

Re: Rally Teams Workshops
thank you all for sharing all these great informations.
frankly speaking, I am a bit surprised when I see the DAF produced cars
but this is a new info for the rally history tho
and thats interesting and funny to see the car has only 2 gears
