Race Retro 2016
Dear All,
Couldn't find anything on the up-coming Race Retro show 26th, 27th and 28th February 2016, so thought I'd pop something up.
Details here: http://www.raceretro.com/
Chris CDM, David Sims, Dave Cox and I will be there amongst others with our respective model displays, surrounded by some very expensive, memorable and lovely 1:1 scale models in the various halls and over the weekend, out on the rally stage. There is a commemoration of Damon Hill's F1 Championship win and 60 years of the BMC Competitons Department. My own display will reflect 60 years of BMC and related marques in motorsport, covering rallying, circuit racing, rallycross (of course!) and speed record attempts.
Here is a link to the Rally Stage information: http://www.raceretro.com/live-rally-stage/4586764460 As a special point of interest, the web page includes a photo of Jumpin' Jeff Williamson's MG Metro 6R4 from 2014 with our very own Chris 'CDM' Derbyshire in thepassenger, sorry co-drivers seat.
Wondered if anyone here would be heading to sunny (?) Stoneleigh Park?
See you there. Cheers, Steve

Re: Race Retro 2016
Well done Steve, too much on my plate at the moment not had time to think about Race Retro...
But yes the South Hants Model Auto Club will be in their usual spot - stand J46 in Hall 1.
We will have a display of 1986 Metro 6R4s from Dave S, Group B cars from 1986 from Dave C, 60 years of BMC motorsport from Steve N, Australian Motorsport from Mick H and 50 years of Can -Am from Paul H. Once again a diverse array of models for you to enjoy.
Hoipefully, I will be in the autojumble in Hall 3 sharing with John Horton.
As Steve mentioned there is a tribute display to Damon Hill and for the rally folk a display of Henri Toivonen cars.
The show is on for 3 days but dont forget the rally cars are only in action on Saturday & Sunday.
If you are coming along please come along and say hello.
Hopefully we can hand out some more DRM flyers.,
See ya there....

Re: Race Retro 2016
Apologies for my lack of any recent contributions, but I've been busy spending every single minute possible building some new models for 'our' MG Metro 6R4 display. I'm working 7-3 early shifts tomorrow and Wednesday, and plan to get down there about 2pm (ish) on Thursday - all being well.
Steve - I did receive your test / email regarding your Andrew Cooper model, but I will decline your very kind offer. Many thanks all the same, but it does not fit within the 1986 theme of the display.
Chris - Did you ever find the graphics panels for the display cabinet?

Ok mate, and thank you for taking the time. If you could let me know if you do find them, that would be great.
Re: Race Retro 2016
Ok David,
Yes, the 2014 car wouldn't really go, would it?

Dave
Phew.... I have found the three parts of the Metro 6R4 backdrop!! All three parts are still in good condition.
Dave C is using the box with the three part shelf system.
Do you want a box with the straight shelves or without these shelves?
Cheers

Re: Race Retro 2016
Superb news re the graphics, Chris!!!!!!! I'm well pleased now...
I've been talking to Dave this evening, and I have no probs for him having the circular plinths. Can you bring the straight steps with you mate, and I will decide on the day if I want to use them or not - or is that not possible?

Yes no problem.
The steps are inside and can be removed as you want.

Thanks mate. Bring them with you - along with the graphic panels - and I'll make a decision tomorrow.
Re: Race Retro 2016
I'll be along on Saturday. Looking forward to seeing another excellent, as always, display of models and the chance to put some faces to names.
Cheers,

Re: Race Retro 2016
Congratulations to everyone involved with the display at Race Retro this weekend. Fantastic and truly inspiring models - with Group B being my particular favourite era the 6R4s and Delta S4s were real highlights. It was also a pleasure to meet Dave, Dave and Chris; hope you all have a great day tomorrow. Steve, I'm disappointed I can't make the show tomorrow myself - it would've been good to have a chat about the golden days of rallycross.

Re: Race Retro 2016
Well, just returned home from RR2016. I wasn't there myself on Saturday, as I was busy earning 'Brownie points' at home, but Friday and today have been excellent.
Had a great time with Chris, David, Dave, Paul and Mick on the model display stand. Plenty of very complementary comments and I got to meet with up with Bill Price, Rosemary Smith, Paul Easter and many others. Awesome!
Today I had the thrill of trips in Jumping Jeff Williamson's rally prepared Mazda RX7 and this afternoon in Terry Maynard's Lotus Esprit rally and rallycross car. This was the car Lotus built for Dimi Mavroupolous in the early 1970s and which he later used in rallycross. Both rides were amazing and I'm very grateful to both Jeff and Terry for their generosity.
I managed to bag some models for my display at home and some donor vehicles too along with some tools for model building.
A great show and superb to see you guys again. Thanks especially to CD for arranging things for us and putting up with us, sorry, putting us up for the duration.
Cheers Steve

Re: Race Retro 2016
I can only echo the comments above.....
Big thank you to Dave, Dave & Steve for their displays on the SHMAC and representing the club in a professional manner. Also the club members Paul & Mick for their displays. To those forum members and there were many thanks for calling in to see us. We had a dispenser with DRM flyers in and there are not many left now, so hopefully a few might join.
As some of you know my weekend didnt start on the front foot. My partner in crime in the autojumble was going to be John Horton. Sadly John had a heart attack the week before Race Retro and sadly pased away on Friday 27th. I took a lot of advice before going as to what to do and all said John would want you to carry on.
I was surrounded by big model dealers and book stalls and they were moaning like drains about poor sales. But in the circumstances my takings were miles over my predictions, it was my best ever indoor autojumble. So having started on the back foot I finished on the front foot.
Regarding the overall show, those who were at the show might have noticed the wallpaper papering over fairly obvious cracks. RR 2016 was poor....very poor in content and presentation compared to previous years. It was no surprise to find out that the Friday that the show had been brought by Clarion (they who organise the NEC Classic car show). What RR 2017 will look like we dont know but lets hope the team are ready with their model displays. Personally I am work on a big Colin McRae 10 years on display. So having just over 360 days to go I better get on with it..

Re: Race Retro 2016
Brief visit to the stand on Saturday and nice to catch up, display looked as good as ever and no I didn't take a biscuit! Sorry that I missed you Chris and to hear your news.
Lots of stalls selling food this year and didn't buy a single thing for the 2nd or 3rd year running but loved seeing the RS1700T again but would be nice to see it on the stage next year!
Talking of the stage the variety of cars was poorer and lots of machines with no real provenance but plenty of running time and not held up by the go karts. Viewing was still fine despite the new H&S rulings and ironically it was an official who nearly got flattened by Worswick on Saturday when he walked out in front of the Escort for some reason. Was surprised that as Henri Toivonen was being celebrated that there no cars related to his career on the stage.
Am interested to hear the news re the promoter guess we will see a rise in ticket prices if nothing else!

Re: Race Retro 2016
So after a long drive home and a little R&R I'm back online
Great weekend at Race retro sadly overshadowed by John's passing, I'm sure he was looking over all weekend.
Despite my initial panic the display was good & was well received by all who viewed it . Thanks CD for the hospitality & the loan of the cabinet & putting up with the crazy gang all weekend, also to Mr Sims for listen to me waffle on about non 6R4 things Nice display aswell with thanks to Simon for the contribution. Also Steve nice BMC, BL, ARM, RS & Xpower display I especially liked the SD1's. Mick & Paul also had some great displays Jaguar, Supermodels & Canam, sadly no pics of the Can Am's but I'm sure somebody will.
As for the show itself it seemed a little quite & less stars than normal so it needs a revamp of some kind. I think the week later in the calendar reduced the numbers. I dint go to view the live stage, was abit cold & would rather be warm & talk cars than freeze Will get pics up somepoint just rearranging the shelves again to put the new acquisitions on display.

Re: Race Retro 2016
This is the press release ref Clarion buying out Race Retro...
http://www.historicracingnews.com/news/NewsItem/413/Race-Retro-Under-New-Ownership
Clearly the venue has been booked for 2017 so that sounds positive?
Race Retro lost money right from the start as Ian Williamson's enthusiasm rather than a sound financial state kept it going in the early days.
It was offered to be part of the Autosport International Show many years ago but the organisers said no, as they were not interested in historics. Oh really...so why are the static displays of old race cars filling large gaps?
Know doubt as exhibitors we will find out about Race Retro 2017 in due course, I will keep you posted.
